Milan have had a good start defensively, but are paper paper-thin at the position and intend to try again to add Joe Gomez in January. They were at a good point in the talks on deadline day. However, the deal was contingent upon Liverpool adding Marc Guehi, which didn’t happen, Mediaset reports.
The Rossoneri will wait in the wings to see whether the Reds will be successful in another attempt for the Crystal Palace ace or another high-caliber defender. They’ll most likely address the position since Giovanni Leoni suffered an ACL tear and could miss the rest of the year.
Milan received the availability of Gomez during the summer. The negotiation had proceeded smoothly, but its premise didn’t come to fruition. They ended up acquiring unproven youngster David Odogu from Wolfsburg for €7M as a fallback. He has played just 11 minutes in Coppa Italia and has made one appearance with their Futuro squad in Serie D.
The Rossoneri could be without one of their stalwarts, Fikayo Tomori, in the upcoming clash with Juventus. He injured his thigh against Napoli. While he has avoided severe problems, he’ll be a late call for Sunday.
Considering a late decision to use a three-man line consistently, their only other established defender behind the starters is Koni De Winter, whom they signed from Genoa for €20M shortly after the departure of Malick Thiaw.
They have gotten away with misusing their resources so far, as they didn’t really need another pricey forward with their current scheme, while another center-back was necessary. If they have the ammo, they should go for a real top player.
