Matveï Safonov’s four saves in the shootout against Flamengo, after a 1-1 draw in extra time, have reopened Paris Saint-Germain’s goalkeeping debate. With Lucas Chevalier injured, he has started four matches and seized his chance in the Intercontinental Cup final.

Chevalier injured his right ankle on 29 November in the 1-0 defeat at Monaco after a tackle by Lamine Camara. According to L'Équipe, Luis Enrique would not set a hierarchy, a familiar theme at PSG since QSI took charge in 2011.

Salvatore Sirigu began the era as first choice with Nicolas Douchez as deputy, before Kevin Trapp arrived for 10 M€ in 2015 and took the gloves under Laurent Blanc. Sirigu was loaned to Sevilla and Osasuna, then left in 2017.

Unai Emery split duties in 2016-2017 between Trapp and Alphonse Areola, yet neither convinced and Barcelona’s 4-0 then 1-6 comeback framed the season. Areola led in 2017-2018, but the uncertainty lingered.

Thomas Tuchel and Gianluigi Buffon arrived in 2018, then Manchester United’s last-16 turnaround, 2-0 then 1-3, underlined the confusion. Tuchel later said the job share could not continue, and in 2019 Keylor Navas arrived with Sergio Rico as clear back-up.

Donnarumma’s 2021 arrival reignited rivalry with Navas before he was installed as first choice. In 2024 Safonov joined from Krasnodar for nearly 20 M€, Donnarumma helped deliver the club’s first European title and then moved to Manchester City, leaving Safonov to battle Chevalier, a signing from Lille for about 40 M€ plus bonuses up to 55 M€.
