Gabigol criticised the officiating after being booked for dissent during Santos’ defeat to Fluminense at Vila Belmiro on Sunday. The caution means he will miss the trip to Bahia at Casa de Apostas Arena Fonte Nova on Saturday 25.
According to Globo.com, the forward was fouled by Bernal in the first half and asked for the Fluminense player to be booked, but referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio cautioned him for protesting. It was the third for the number nine, triggering an automatic suspension for the next round.
Santos’ leading scorer this season, Gabigol ended a goal drought of more than a month against the Rio club. He had not scored since the 15 March draw with Corinthians in the 6th round of the Brasileirão.
He said he had taken a heavy foul and could not be expected to ask politely for a card in the middle of a hard game. He added that emotions run high on the pitch, and while he will miss the next match, the referee will continue to officiate.
Before facing Bahia, Santos host Coritiba at Vila Belmiro on Wednesday in the Copa do Brasil.
