Gabigol handed one-match ban by STJD for obscene gesture at fan | OneFootball

Gabigol has been suspended for one match by the STJD after making an obscene gesture towards a supporter during Santos’ meeting with Vitória.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the STJD’s third disciplinary commission imposed the sanction after the incident at Vila Belmiro in the 18th round of the Brasileirão on Saturday 30, moments after he scored Santos’ third goal. During his celebration, he turned towards a critic and grabbed his genitals.

VAR official Wagner Reway flagged the conduct and advised referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein to consult the monitor. The red card followed once the images confirmed the gesture.

Despite the dismissal and the ruling, the forward will serve only one game. He will miss Santos’ next league fixture, against Botafogo on 22 July, after the end of the World Cup.

The case was framed under Article 258 of the CBJD for behaviour contrary to ethics. Prosecutor Beatriz Calheta argued that players with significant reach cannot normalise disrespect, or it risks damaging the image the sport seeks to project to supporters.
