Gabriel Jesus marks 10 years since Palmeiras’ Copa do Brasil triumph

December 2 marks a decade since Palmeiras won the 2015 Copa do Brasil, a title that initiated the club's victorious streak in the “Allianz Parque Era” and represented the beginning of the team's and institution's reconstruction. But for one name in particular, the date holds even more significance: Gabriel Jesus.

Having been developed in the club's youth system, the forward celebrated the 10-year anniversary of his first professional trophy and recalled the moment that propelled his career in world football.

“It feels like it was yesterday”

At the time, 18-year-old Gabriel Jesus experienced his first season with the main team in 2015 and played a direct role in winning the Copa do Brasil, participating in 9 out of 13 matches and scoring three goals.

“It feels like it was yesterday, but the 2015 Copa do Brasil meant a lot to me. It was the year I moved up to the professional team and started getting chances as a starter in some games. These 10 years since my first triumph with the main team symbolize an era of great effort, struggle, and overcoming obstacles, because from that point on, I won more titles with Palmeiras, like a Brazilian Championship after 22 years. I also reached Europe and played in two World Cups. It’s like a movie in my head, because it seems easy to talk about it now, but only those who know what I went through from the first steps in the youth system understand the difficulty of getting here and achieving what I have. I'm not just talking about achievements on the field, but also about my personal life, my family, my wife, my children. That's why 2015 was a very important year for me,” he said.

Among the memorable games of that campaign, Gabriel chooses the 3-2 victory over Cruzeiro at Mineirão in the round of 16. On that occasion, he scored two goals, one of which is considered one of the most beautiful of his career, after a one-two with Egídio and a dribble past goalkeeper Fábio.

“There were many memorable games, as our campaign in that Copa do Brasil was marked by epic comebacks and the strength of Allianz Parque. We won all the games there, and that was historic, as it also showed how much the support of the fans made a difference. But I think the most memorable game for me was the 3-2 victory over Cruzeiro at Mineirão, where I scored two goals, one of them one of the most beautiful of my career, and assisted another for Barrios. We advanced to the quarter-finals and were strengthened for the rest of the competition,” the player adds.

In a packed Allianz Parque, Palmeiras defeated Santos 2-1 in regular time and secured the title on penalties 4-3, after losing 1-0 at Vila Belmiro in the first match. It was the first trophy for the stadium inaugurated in 2014 and a turning point for the club, then led by Paulo Nobre and already in partnership with Crefisa.
