After a third consecutive World Cup play-off exit, Italian federation president Gabriele Gravina is expected to present his resignation at Thursday’s federal council meeting, according to Gazzetta. Gennaro Gattuso could also leave.

Gravina replaced Carlo Tavecchio in 2017 after Italy failed to reach the 2018 World Cup. Nearly nine years on, an extraordinary federal council has been convened following the heavy defeat in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He was re-elected unopposed in February 2025. Italy’s sports minister has also called for his departure.

A commission would then be tasked with appointing a new president within 90 days.

Appointed on 15 June 2025, Gattuso was initially backed by Gravina after the loss, but the former midfielder could still step aside. Names floated as potential successors include Roberto Mancini and Massimiliano Allegri, as well as Pep Guardiola.
