Arsenal came from behind to snatch a late 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
The match nearly swung Arsenal’s way earlier on when Viktor Gyökeres went down under a challenge from Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot, but after a lengthy VAR review, it was ruled that Pope had made sufficient contact with the ball, denying Arsenal a penalty.
The hosts took the lead shortly after, on 34 minutes, when Nick Woltemade rose to meet Sandro Tonali’s corner and headed the ball into the bottom-left corner. Despite Arsenal protests that Woltemade had pushed Gabriel Magalhães, VAR confirmed minimal contact, and the goal stood, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead at half-time.
The visitors dominated possession throughout the match and created numerous chances, only to be repeatedly denied by a string of world-class saves from Pope.
Second-half substitutions injected fresh energy, with Mikel Merino, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Odegaard all making key contributions.
Arsenal finally drew level in the 84th minute when Merino met Declan Rice’s precise corner to head home his first goal of the season.
The winning moment came deep into stoppage time. From a corner, Odegaard delivered a perfect ball into the box, and Gabriel Magalhães rose to nod home from close range, scoring his first goal of the campaign and securing all three points for the north London side in dramatic fashion.
The victory lifts Mikel Arteta’s men to second in the table, just two points behind leaders Liverpool, while Newcastle remain 15th.
