Liverpool showcased their fighting spirit in a thrilling encounter at Anfield, where they came from behind to defeat Brighton and claim the top spot in the Premier League. The match, set against the backdrop of a raucous home crowd, delivered drama as two of Liverpool’s title rivals suffered unexpected losses, allowing the Reds to capitalise.
Brighton, who entered the game with confidence, were poised to climb to third place after Ferdi Kadioglu’s superb 16-yard strike found the net via the inside of the post. The first half saw the Seagulls dominating possession and silencing the typically vocal Liverpool supporters.
However, Liverpool’s equaliser came from a surprising source. Cody Gakpo’s left-wing delivery bypassed everyone and found its way into the net, marking his third goal against Brighton in just four days, following his Carabao Cup heroics. Just moments later, Mohamed Salah produced a moment of brilliance, curling a beautiful shot from the right side of the box into the far corner, flipping the game on its head.

The match was marked by Liverpool’s resilience, as they faced a Brighton side that played with confidence and style. In the early stages, Brighton managed to keep the Anfield faithful subdued. The visitors could have extended their lead, but Caoimhin Kelleher’s crucial save from Georginio Rutter kept Liverpool within reach.
Under the guidance of their new manager, Arne Slot, Liverpool have now triumphed in 13 of their 15 matches. The Reds are perched two points above Manchester City, who were stunned by Bournemouth, and Arsenal, who were defeated by Newcastle.
Despite their early struggles, Liverpool found their rhythm in the second half. Slot’s tactical adjustments saw the team fire seven shots on target compared to just one in the first half. Substitute Joe Gomez tested the keeper with a header soon after his introduction, and Virgil van Dijk squandered a promising opportunity with a miscued attempt.
Salah also attempted an audacious chip that was saved, but the hosts were visibly growing in confidence. The breakthrough arrived when Gakpo’s cross somehow evaded the Brighton defence and nestled into the net. Darwin Nunez, initially thought to have scored, joined the celebrations, although replays confirmed he had not touched the ball.
Salah’s match-winning strike, a trademark effort curled from the right, reaffirmed his status as Liverpool’s talisman. From that point, the Reds maintained their advantage with composure, rarely appearing in danger of relinquishing their lead.

Despite the loss, Brighton have reasons to hold their heads high. Under 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler, the youngest permanent Premier League manager, the Seagulls have continued to impress. Their style of play and tactical discipline suggest they could be in the mix for significant achievements this season.
Brighton deserved their early lead, which came after Danny Welbeck’s deft play found Kaoru Mitoma, whose cross set up Kadioglu’s landmark first goal in English football. The Seagulls nearly doubled their advantage when Jack Hinshelwood played Rutter through on goal, only for Kelleher to make a crucial save.
However, as Liverpool gained momentum in the second half, Brighton’s attacking threat diminished. They managed only one shot on target after the break, a reflection of Liverpool’s defensive organisation and increased intensity.
Liverpool’s victory, coupled with unexpected losses for Manchester City and Arsenal, injects fresh excitement into the Premier League title race. Slot’s leadership has breathed new life into the Reds, whose only defeat this season came at the hands of Nottingham Forest, now a surprise contender in third place following their win over West Ham.
Brighton, meanwhile, remain a team to watch. Their capacity to challenge the league’s top sides and the progressive work under Hurzeler points to a team capable of shaking up the traditional order. The match at Anfield may have ended in disappointment for the visitors, but their performance reaffirmed their potential to stay competitive in the upper echelons of the Premier League.
