Gareth Southgate and England are through to the semi-finals of the 2024 European Championships.
Like pretty much all of you out there, it is Newcastle United (or insert another club) first, second, third…
I am, like the vast majority, a tournament fan, where England is concerned.
When the finals of the World Cup or Euros come around, I take a decent interest in how England gets on and indeed the tournament overall, as I wait for proper football to return for my club.
As a backstory to these current 2024 Euros, I have been intrigued by the Gareth Southgate developing situation.
There has never been an England manager who has got through to the later stages of tournaments, who appears to be seen by so many England fans as totally clueless.
Or am I reading this wrong, is Gareth Southgate simply misunderstood?
The last week has seen the final Premier League clubs confirm their managers in place for the new season (see below).
So trying to sort in my head as to the Gareth Southgate situation (is he clueless and simply lucky, or just misunderstood?), I asked myself these two questions:
Which Premier League fanbases would swap their current manager for Gareth Southgate?
Which Premier League fanbases if their club loses its current manager sometime during the current season, would want Gareth Southgate to take over?
I can’t imagine any fan of a Premier League club wanting to swap their current boss for Gareth Southgate AND even if their current manager leaves during the 2024/25 season, I also can’t imagine for one second any club team supporter choosing Gareth Southgate as the replacement.
It is quite extraordinary, an unparalleled situation, Gareth Southgate having taken England to a World Cup semi-final and a Euros final, now in a Euros semi-final again, yet I honestly can’t believe any fans of a Premier League club would want him.
I certainly have never ever met a Newcastle United fan who would want Gareth Southgate.
Maybe you can tell me differently in the comments section below.
Do you think Gareth Southgate is a great manager and would be a great choice at St James’ Park???
