Italy crashed out of the 2026 World Cup race after a penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, drawing 1-1 then losing 4-1. It is their third straight failure to reach the finals, a heavy setback for the four-time champions.
According to Superdeporte, federation president Gabriele Gravina has given Gennaro Gattuso unexpected backing, praising his commitment, professionalism and the cohesion he has fostered in a difficult dressing room.
Gravina said the players had been heroic during qualifying and that the failure was not down to a lack of effort or commitment. He expressed pride in the staff and squad, adding that the project under Gattuso could evolve and deliver better results.
He added that the coach’s future will be assessed by the Federal Council, which is set to meet soon. While he acknowledged criticism and calls for resignations after the exit, Gravina signalled the intention to keep faith with Gattuso and the current process.
For now, after a bruising elimination, Italy look to rebuild under Gattuso’s leadership with an eye on upcoming international tournaments.
