Incoming Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso is urging key players to remain, with Alessio Romagnoli central to his plans. According to The Laziali, he has been pleading with stalwarts to stay at Formello.

Gattuso has contacted Ivan Provedel and Kenneth Taylor, but his toughest mission remains convincing his former Milan pupil Romagnoli to extend his time at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 31-year-old is a lifelong Lazio supporter, yet relations with president Claudio Lotito have deteriorated after a series of broken promises. He was ready to join Al-Sadd in January, only for the move to collapse at the eleventh hour amid controversy.

Romagnoli will reportedly reconsider his future, with several factors in play. The Qatari champions had vowed to try again this summer, though it is unclear if they will still offer a three-year deal worth €six million per season.

He will also weigh the situation in the Middle East amid the current unrest. Roberto Mancini, viewed as his main sponsor at Al-Sadd, is expected to leave and return to Italy.

Owing to these factors, his departure is no longer a foregone conclusion. Beyond Gattuso’s pleas, an olive branch from the Lazio hierarchy may be needed to keep him, at least until his contract runs to June 2027.

Gattuso is also pushing the club to keep Mario Gila at Formello. The Spaniard is tied to 2027 and has suitors in Italy and across Europe.
