Family, friends, former players and supporters gathered in Vila Velha on Tuesday for a final farewell to Geovani Silva, a Vasco da Gama and Desportiva Ferroviária idol and former Brazil international, who died early on Monday after a cardiorespiratory arrest. The “Pequeno Príncipe da Colina” had his wake at Igreja Maranata da Praia da Costa, with emotional tributes, according to Globo.com.
The wake began in the morning with a service reserved for relatives, close friends and admirers. Former Vasco team-mates Acácio and Válber attended alongside officials, figures from Espírito Santo football and fans keen to pay respects.
His son, Geovani Filho, said the hardest moment has been losing a father and idol, and that humility was his greatest legacy. He described him as simple, faithful and resilient, someone who taught the family to stay grounded and value life.
Funeral agent Rickson de Souza, a Vasco supporter who helped prepare the wake, spoke of pride and emotion at being involved. He wore a shirt gifted by Geovani and recalled growing up watching his goals. Former goalkeeper Acácio reflected on a brotherly bond dating back to the 1980s and noted he had been widely appreciated during his lifetime.
Vasco da Gama were represented by second vice-president general Renato Brito Neto, who underlined Geovani’s importance to the club’s history and the connection with Espírito Santo, adding the club had a duty to attend.
Late in the morning the coffin left the church on an Espírito Santo Fire Service truck for a cortege to Cemitério Parque da Paz in Ponta da Fruta, also in Vila Velha. It remained in the chapel for final farewells before burial at 16:00.
