The youth coach of Sporting Lisbon star Geovany Quenda has expressed confidence in the player’s chances of joining Manchester United in the summer.
United continue to be strongly linked to Quenda as they lay the groundwork for a summer overhaul, targeting players who are suited to Ruben Amorim’s preferred formation.
The two worked together at Sporting before Amorim was appointed United boss late last year. It was Amorim who included Quenda in first-team training at Sporting last season before handing him his professional debut in August.
The 17-year-old became the club’s youngest-ever scorer after netting on his first senior appearance.
So far this season, Quenda has already made more than 30 appearances across all competitions. He can be deployed as a wing-back as was the case under Amorim but in recent games, he has played as a more traditional winger, switching to a higher position on the left.
It has been suggested that United are working on securing Quenda’s services when the summer transfer window commences.
A report from Portugal even claimed that the Red Devils are assured to sign the teenager.
Portuguese outlet A Bola spoke to Quenda’s youth coach Bernardo Bruschy, who revealed that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Sporting man made the jump to Old Trafford.
Bruschy said, “Seeing his name being associated with clubs of the biggest size in Europe surprises me just because it is so early, I am not surprised if he gets there.”
“Sometimes we forget that Quenda is only 17 years old. His maturity, his quality and the performance he can already give to the team, even though he is so young, are something out of the ordinary.”
“And that makes us forget his age, but in fact he is only 17 years old and has a lot to improve and grow, but he is already a player who is at a state of maturity far ahead of what is normal for his age.”
Record recently noted that United scouts were present in Porto on Friday night as Sporting came up against their league rivals. Quenda is believed to have been the player they were looking it.
He played all 90 minutes of the 1-1 draw.
