FIFA president Gianni Infantino watched Iran beat Costa Rica 5-0 in Türkiye on Tuesday, and reiterated his belief the team will be at the 2026 World Cup despite its participation still in question amid a war with the United States.

“The matches will take place where they should, according to the draw,” he said at half-time of the friendly.

The tournament runs from 11 June to 19 July, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. Iran is supposed to be placed in Group G, expected to play on US soil, alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.

“They qualified on the pitch and did so early. It is a football country, we want it to take part. It will play the 2026 World Cup, there is no plan B, C or D, it is plan A,” Infantino said, speaking to N+Univision on Monday.

The move was seen as symbolic while Iran’s involvement remains uncertain.
