Gianni Infantino has defended his plan to create a FIFA commercial company and sell up to a 20% stake to private investors. He described it as an opportunity rather than an obligation, and said any decision would be taken within a democratic process.

According to The Times, the 211 member associations have 53 days, until 19 September, to approve the proposal.

Infantino set out the idea in a FIFA video and said it marks the start of a consultation he wants to be as open as possible.

He presented it as a proposal and an offer designed to increase revenues for the global game.

Several major federations, including those in France and England, have voiced doubts and concerns since the plan emerged. Infantino has been FIFA president since 2016.
