The shocking 6-2 thrashing by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League has left Napoli reeling, and captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was the first to face the music, issuing a heartfelt apology to the club’s devoted supporters. While the tactical deficiencies are clear following the disastrous result, for the Azzurri leader, the immediate pain is for the thousands of Neapolitans who watched their team collapse.
Speaking after the final whistle, the right-back admitted the squad was deeply embarrassed by the “poor showing,” stating flatly to Sky (via TMW): “The people of Naples do not deserve this disgrace (questa brutta figura).” His words reflect a squad acutely aware of the shame brought upon the reigning Scudetto champions, especially given their historic connection with the city.
Di Lorenzo insisted that this disastrous night must serve as a painful but necessary turning point. “We have to shoulder the responsibility,” he added. “We have to apologize and react immediately.” The captain’s contrite message makes it clear that while the scoreline is unforgivable, the players are united in their commitment to make amends and prove they still possess the quality and spirit worthy of the Partenopei shirt.
The Italy international further claimed that Napoli have lost the balance from last season and look far less compact.
“We’re fragile right now. Last year we were very solid, this year we’ve lost our compactness and balance. We’re offering something different up front, but we can’t afford to concede certain goals.”
The Partenopei have now lost two games in a row and would be hoping that things change soon.
