Borussia Mönchengladbach missed the chance to go level on points with Mainz after Yannik Engelhardt conceded a penalty-kick in the last action of the game. In a night that saw Gladbach’s outgoing captain Rocco Reitz whistled by his own fans, their winless run extended to four matches.
"In the end, we didn't manage to get it over the finish line,” said Gladbach’s coach Eugen Polanski after the disappointing result. Mainz deserved the point for their total dominance in the final 30 minutes of the game.
Rouven Schröder also shared his insights in the mixed zone after the game. “We stood in the deep block. Most importantly, it's not about playing beautiful football. It’s only about keeping Borussia (Gladbach), this great club, in the league. If you just settle in like today, that won’t be enough,” said the club’s sporting director.
Polanski was handed a contract until 2028 after promising results in his time as an interim coach, but it’s now uncertain whether Gladbach will start the new season with the former central midfielder.
“First, we have four games where we want to put everything in, including next week at a direct competitor,” Schröder said in reference to the game against Wolfsburg. “But it’s perfectly clear that we’re not satisfied with ourselves.
“Let's leave the question about the coach. Eugen (Polanski) will lead us over the line. Then we will review the season together. But, he’s our coach.”
