In a summer that has already reshaped expectations at Anfield, Mark Goldbridge has revealed that “Liverpool have actually started talks with Rodrygo and Real Madrid” as the club eyes yet another high-profile signing. The transfer buzz comes just weeks after Arne Slot’s side lifted the Premier League title, and it appears Liverpool are not content to rest on their laurels.
According to Goldbridge on That’s Football, the move is more than speculative: “Other outlets are saying that talks have begun for Rodrygo from Liverpool.” He adds weight to the possibility by citing Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, saying “Liverpool are monitoring this situation and prepared to pounce.”
What would be a landmark signing for Liverpool is also strategically tied to the future of Luis Díaz. “Rodrygo to Liverpool is very, very, very possible,” Goldbridge said, “but I think it is intrinsically linked to Luis Diaz going to Bayern Munich, which frees up the funds and the space in the team.”
This summer represents a notable change in tone from Liverpool’s recent transfer windows. Goldbridge commented on the transformation: “Liverpool fans haven’t been happy with the ownership and their ambition in the market, and then suddenly this summer… they are willing to break records.”
He notes that the club’s approach has evolved, particularly after their title-winning campaign. “Liverpool’s pull is that they’ve just won the Premier League and they’re one of the best teams in the world,” he remarked, underlining the allure Anfield now holds in the transfer market.
Goldbridge praised Liverpool’s transfer strategy, highlighting their flexibility: “They’ve already bought in a number of players… and obviously they’re going to bring a centre-back in as well.”
With Liverpool monitoring players like Faras from Lyon and weighing whether to keep Díaz or replace him, the Rodrygo deal would mark a significant step in maintaining momentum after their title win.
While Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has the pedigree, his reputation has taken a slight hit. “It feels to me like Rodrygo’s crown has slipped a little bit,” said Goldbridge. “People see him as a bit of a flop.”
Yet, the pundit believes in Rodrygo’s potential: “He has the profile and talent to come into the Premier League and make a real difference.” Goldbridge suggested that the success of such a move depends heavily on the club environment: “You go to a team like Liverpool or Arsenal, you’ve got other players, you’ve got managers, you’ve got styles of play that are going to allow you to nurture and settle.”
He went on to contrast the impact of joining Spurs, “You’re probably going to flop because the expectations will be very big in a team that’s not really seen as one of the better teams in England at the moment.”
Rodrygo, now slightly older than fans may assume, could thrive under the structure and winning mentality fostered at Liverpool. Goldbridge made it clear: “I can see him doing well.”
If Díaz completes his anticipated move to Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s response is likely to be quick. Goldbridge speculated: “Whatever happens, it will be a swift response before or just after Luis Diaz finalises a deal to Bayern.”
Slot and Liverpool’s backroom staff have earned praise for their calculated yet assertive transfer strategy this summer. “Their preparation is very, very good,” said Goldbridge. With three weeks left before the new season begins, time is short, but Liverpool appear firmly in control of their transfer trajectory.
The Rodrygo deal may not be final yet, but Liverpool are clearly poised to continue their post-Klopp evolution with conviction. In a market where clubs are pushing each other with every major signing, as Goldbridge puts it, “It’s almost like they’re goading each other to the next deal.”
