Gonzalo García’s 70 million euros Real Madrid sale to Fulham raises questions | OneFootball

According to Superdeporte, Real Madrid have sold Gonzalo García to Fulham for 70 million euros, a fee that has prompted suspicion over the timing and purpose. The move comes as Madrid prepare significant outlays on Diomandé and Rodri Hernández.

The striker will work under Álvaro Arbeloa at Fulham. The sale ranks third in the club’s history, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Ángel Di María.

The operation appears unusual for several reasons. Until recent days Fulham had offered at most 30 million euros while Madrid wanted to retain a slice of his rights. The 70 million outlay arrives just as the Bernabéu club move to formalise major incoming deals.

Questions have grown because Gonzalo García has only one year in the elite. He has not been an undisputed starter and he did not go to the World Cup, so there was no tournament bounce in his value.

Madrid have shown in the recent past that they can sell academy players well, even those with little senior mileage. Others earned big moves after loans in which they proved top level, such as Marcos Llorente, Martin Odegaard and Achraf.

The report also notes that César Palacios and Gonzalo García share an agency with Fulham coach Álvaro Arbeloa.
