Anthony Gordon will miss the Carabao Cup final this month after Newcastle decided againt appealing the winger’s red card last weekend.
Gordon was sent off during Newcastle’s extra-time defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup’s fifth round. The winger was dismissed after pushing his hands into the face of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke at St James’ Park.
Gordon will be banned for three games, ruling the 23-year-old out of Monday’s Premier League clash at West Ham, next weekend’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, and the club’s league meeting with Brentford on April 2nd.
His absence at Wembley next week is a huge blow to Eddie Howe and his side, who are targeting their first major domestic silverware in 70 years.
However, Howe has confirmed that Newcastle will not appeal the ban, with the Magpies feeling ‘there wasn’t sufficient grounds’ to overturn the decision.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing West Ham, Howe said: “It’s always a discussion point and we discussed it with a club with the respective people we needed to discuss it with – lawyers etc – and we felt there wasn’t sufficient grounds to do that.
“There was no intention from Anthony. He didn’t mean to hurt anybody. But, you have to look at it and ask if there is any chance of being successful and if there is no chance then what is the point of appealing and Anthony understands that.”
