Sunderland’s squad flooded social media after their comeback Tyne-Wear derby win at St James’ Park, with Granit Xhaka’s four-word message to supporters setting the tone. According to Sunderland Echo, images and captions captured the scale and emotion of the result.
Sunderland fell behind early, then produced a resilient second half to turn it around. Chemsdine Talbi, 20 years and 317 days, became the youngest Sunderland player to score against Newcastle in the Premier League.
Gratitude towards the travelling fans was a common thread. Goalkeeper Melker Ellborg posted a shot of the jubilant away end and thanked them, while Omar Alderete shared a +3 message with red and white emojis to mark the points and the fight.
Lutsharel Geertruida offered a pointed nod to local bragging rights from inside St James’ Park. Sunderland are unbeaten in their last 11 league meetings with Newcastle United, who have not won this fixture at home since 2010 or in the league at all since 2011.
Xhaka, visibly annoyed during parts of the first half, later wrote that the win meant everything, adding a red heart and his personal hashtag. Under his post, match-winner Brian Brobbey hailed his captain and others called the victory historic.
The exchanges between teammates underlined a united dressing room and a performance that grew after the break. Players continued to feed off the momentum long after leaving the pitch.
