Granit Xhaka’s Sunderland book value helps explain why only a sizeable fee from Chelsea would make financial sense.

According to Sunderland Echo, Xhaka joined last summer in a package worth about £17.5million on a three-year deal, a cost typically amortised at roughly £5.8million per season.

After one season, around £5.5million to £6million would be written down, leaving an estimated book value of about £11.5million to £12million. The exact figure depends on add-ons and payment structure, so it remains an approximation.

An offer near £10million would likely sit below that mark and risk an accounting loss. A bid around £12million to £12.5million edges towards break-even, which is not a profit.

To post an accounting profit, any fee must exceed the remaining book value. From a pure numbers view, something closer to £15million is more persuasive, while a figure approaching or surpassing the original £17.5million would recover most of the commitment.

The equation is not only financial. Xhaka is Sunderland’s captain and a central figure in Régis Le Bris’ midfield, and the club do not want to sell unless an offer is simply too good to ignore.
