HSV started brightly with Philip Otele's bicycle-kick effort inside the first five minutes. The next chances fell to Fabians Rieder and William Mikelbrencic at either end. The latter lost a duel when the visitors took the lead through Artur Chaves at the midpoint of the half.

Finn Dahmen made a couple of saves to secure the lead for Augsburg at half-time, but Michael Gregoritsch stole the headlines with a rare sportsmanship moment in injury-time. The Austrian striker was given a free-kick at the edge of the box by Deniz Aytekin, but he told the experienced referee that it wasn't a foul by Fabio Vieira.

HSV's first chance after the restart saw Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer's effort go just wide of the left post. Alexis Claude-Maurice tried to test Daniel Heuer Fernandes with Augsburg's first chance of the half before the Ghanaian international leveled the score at the hour mark.

Königsdörffer finished a well-worked move by HSV from 15 meters with the assist coming from Robin Glatzel, who had a decent game in a rare start for him. The evergreen Luka Vušković nearly put them in front three minutes later when his header hit the post before the next big moment of the game at the end.

Miro Muheim, who played his part in Königsdörffer's goal, was sent off for a professional foul on the German U21 International Anton Kade. While HSV had to make defensive substitutions to deal with the situation, Augsburg regained control for the last 25 minutes of a balanced game.

After sustained pressure from Augsburg, which included two golden chances for Gregoritsch, HSV had the final three chances of the game. Substitutes Albert Grönbaek and Giorgi Gocholeishvili came very close after a bizarre incident between Cédric Zesiger and Dahmen nearly caused a comical goal.

There was also a potential penalty-kick incident for HSV, but it was waved away after a brief VAR check. Augsburg will stay in tenth place as they maintain their single point lead over their hosts.
