Grêmio’s pursuit of Argentine midfielder Guido Rodriguez has stalled. His camp prefers to keep him in Europe, so the club are assessing alternative holding midfield options.

From the outset, Grêmio viewed the deal as difficult. Lacking the agent’s backing, their first proposal fell short of West Ham’s valuation, although the English club is not the main hurdle as the player has six months left and is not used regularly. Superdeporte reported on Wednesday that Valencia ended talks after differences with West Ham proved insurmountable.

Rival interest from major European sides is also hindering progress. Ajax and Juventus are said to have made enquiries. Rodríguez’s profile is enhanced by his inclusion in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup squad, even as a reserve.

Club sources have not ruled out a deal but stress the difficulties that have existed from the start.

Agent Pablo Sabbag, of InterPlayers, which represents Guido Rodriguez, did not respond to messages seeking comment.
