Grêmio have reduced the risk of another transfer ban by settling a debt with Uruguay’s River Plate linked to Arezo’s first loan to Peñarol last year.

According to Globo.com, the club paid €151,500 on Monday, equivalent to half of the fee received from Peñarol at the time. River Plate hold 50% of the player’s economic rights.

River Plate had taken the matter to FIFA in November 2025 over the unpaid sum. Without payment, Grêmio could have been blocked from registering new players.

Attention now turns to the second loan to Peñarol, for which Grêmio are due $400,000 in two instalments. River Plate are entitled to $200,000, payable within 15 days of Grêmio receiving the money from Peñarol.

Arezo is under contract with Grêmio until the end of 2028 and has been loaned again to Peñarol until the end of 2026. The club were on FIFA’s transfer ban list between November and December due to a separate Arezo-related debt to Granada in Spain, R$ 7 million for the player’s purchase in 2024, which was cleared in the final days of December.
