Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has discussed the possibility of Vincent Kompany one day taking over the reins at the club.

Kompany spent 11 years as a player with City, captaining the side for seven of those. A statue of him stands outside the Etihad, honouring his contributions to the club’s triumphs during his time.

The Belgian defender was City captain when Guardiola arrived in Manchester and played under the Catalan for three years. Since then he has gone into management, establishing himself as one of the top coaches in Europe.

City travel to Burnley on Wednesday night, and the last time they visited it was Kompany who was in charge at Turf Moor. The Belgian is now boss of one of Guardiola’s former sides – Bayern Munich.

“Well, I would say not bad at all,” Guardiola commented on his former player’s rise as a manager. “So I congratulate of course Vinny and Bayern Munich.

“They show high, high quality football and entertaining football with a lot of goals and actions.

“I know the people are so happy in Munich, they won the Bundesliga again. Just a huge congratulations for the whole organisation from Bayern. And now ready for the Champions League semi-finals. So I wish him of course all the best.”

Given his links with the club, Kompany has long been touted as a potential future boss at the Etihad. Guardiola himself has said as much in the past.

Guardiola said: “I said that a long time ago when we were against Burnley, in the FA Cup or Carabao Cup. We played at home, and I saw the games, I said that guy will be the manager sooner or later.

“But still so young, still has had just two years in Munich, so still will be there.

“But sooner or later I have the feeling, just in case he decides in a certain moment, he will decide and Bayern will decide, to come back to England.

“I’m pretty sure Manchester will be in his heart and will be in his mind, and hopefully the path will cross at a certain point in his life.”
