The Spaniard hasn’t played since last month’s home victory over Arsenal.

Ahead of Saturday’s latest Premier League outing, Guardiola was unsure if the 29-year-old will be ready to return.

“We’ll see this afternoon,” he said.

“We have survived without him for many months.

“Still he doesn’t feel completely comfortable and when he will be ready to come back we’ll see this afternoon, hopefully tomorrow.”

The boss also had a positive update on Josko Gvardiol, who has been out since January with a broken leg.

The Croatian defender has now returned to training and Guardiola hopes he can have an impact in the final weeks of the campaign.

The boss also suggested Ruben Dias is nearing a return.

“He’s [Gvardiol] training and feels good,” said Guardiola.

“It’s been many months, last season he was the important player for us with many injuries, he plays all the games, but the body says at one moment enough is enough.

“We are happy he’s back. Hopefully he can help us in the last part of the season and have a good World Cup with Croatia and next season we can have him again at his best.

“He’s an important player, central defender, full-back, can play different roles, he’s so fast and quick.

“Really good. Really good to have him back like Ruben as well.”

The boss also spoke about the challenge posed by Brentford in Saturday’s 17:30 (UK) kick-off.

The visitors go into the weekend seventh in the Premier League and still in with a shout of European qualification for next term.

Guardiola was quick to praise his opposite number Keith Andrews.

“It’s not easy to replace Thomas [Frank],” he said.

“Incredible season, clear what they do and difficult to challenge them but at the same time, we have three games left at the Etihad and we’ll go for it.”
