Borussia Dortmund has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup. On Tuesday night, the Black and Yellows faced the formidable Monterrey in Atlanta, securing a 2-1 victory.
With this result, the team led by Niko Kovac moves up a level in the competition and will next face Real Madrid, who qualified after defeating Juventus.
Monterrey showed plenty of courage, adopting an aggressive stance that troubled Dortmund's defence in the early minutes. At the tenth minute, Deossa tried his luck from distance and nearly caught Kobel off guard, who made a fine save.
On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund was clinical and punished the Mexicans on their first significant attack. At the 14th minute, after a series of passes in the attack, Guirassy received the ball, played a one-two with Adeyemi, and slotted it past Andrada.
The team managed by Domenec Torrent tried to respond quickly and even hit the post through Jesus Corona, but the night belonged to Serhou Guirassy. At the 23rd minute, the Black and Yellows' striker received the ball in the box after a run from Adeyemi and, with supreme skill, he flicked it past the goalkeeper to double the German advantage.
The Mexican side did not back down and continued to push forward. Deossa tested Kobel again with a long-range shot, Canales tried from just outside the box, but it was Dortmund who came closer to scoring a third.
After the break, Monterrey, needing to push forward, applied pressure and quickly reduced the deficit. Before the third minute, following a cross from the left, the ball lingered in the box and fell to Berterame, who shot past Kobel to make it 2-1.
Now more confident after scoring, the Mexican team, driven by their supporters in Atlanta, pinned Dortmund back and created several chances to level the score.
At the 20th minute, Monterrey evened the score with Berterame, but the goal was disallowed. The number 7 received a beautiful pass from Corona (in an offside position), broke into the box, and finished past the goalkeeper. The assistant referee confirmed the offside. No goal.
As time passed, the scenario remained the same. With a more reactive strategy, Dortmund dropped deeper and waited for a chance to settle the game. It never came. On the contrary.
In the final minutes, Monterrey went all out. In stoppage time, after another long ball on the right, Aguirre got to the byline and delivered a perfect cross to Sergio Ramos, who had the chance to force extra time but headed just wide.
