Haaland closes in on Lionel Messi record with latest goal

Erling Haaland just cannot be stopped this season. The Manchester City machine netted the opener as Pep Guardiola’s side won 2-0 at Villarreal in the Champions League.

Haaland’s goal made it 12 consecutive fixtures with a goal for club and country, and extended his record in 2025/26 to 15 in 11 games for the Citizens.

He’s now reached 53 goals in the Champions League, in just 51 games. Only eight players have ever scored more Champions League goals than Haaland, while only one has recorded more before their 26th birthday.

A certain Lionel Messi netted 59 in the competition before that milestone, though Haaland is hunting him down.

The Norwegian does not turn 26 until the summer, giving him the entire 2025/26 season to move past Messi’s mark.
