Currently without a club, Davie Selke showed a desire to remain at newly-promoted Hamburg but the two parties were unable to agree a contract extension beyond the summer. That resulted in HSV pursuing RB Leipzig’s Yussuf Poulsen, which is expected to be completed imminently, putting an end to Selke’s potential return to the club.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Stefan Kuntz rejected any claims that Selke would be returning to the club. “We currently have a great target striker in Bobby Glatzel. If we had Davie with us, it would be a second. If we brought in Yussuf Poulsen, it would be a third. And if the Bundesliga were to start tomorrow, Ransford Königsdörffer would start and Yussuf would play. Then we’d have one on the bench and one not in the squad.”
As Selke and his entourage search for a new club, Hamburg’s top scorer last season could well be heading to Turkey. İstanbul Başakşehir, Eyüpspor and Kasımpaşa are three clubs from Istanbul that are showing an interest in signing Selke, but the player and his family – having visited İstanbul – want to familiarise themselves first before negotiations become more concrete.
