It has been a testing seven days for Manchester United.
After the disappointment of a 2-0 defeat in their first-ever League Cup final following the international break, Marc Skinner’s side were looking to get their WSL campaign back on track against West Ham United.
However, a stubborn Hammers defence held the Reds to a 0-0 draw at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, a result that sees United slip to third in the table with Arsenal breathing down their necks for that final Champions League spot.
Speaking to the club’s official website after the final whistle, Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist didn’t hide her frustration at the performance and the result.
Lundkvist, who joined United to bolster their defensive options, admitted that the team failed to hit the heights required to take all three points back to Manchester.
“Yeah, as you say, it was a hard game. I don’t think we got up to the level we should have,” Lundkvist reflected. “They [West Ham] made it difficult for us — it’s super frustrating right now.”
The Swede emphasized that the squad travelled south with only one goal in mind, making the eventual deadlock even harder to swallow.
Lundkvist said: “Yeah, we’re not happy at all. We came here for three points — that was the goal.”
A recurring theme for United recently — notably during their clash with Chelsea last Sunday — has been the inability to convert dominance into goals.
Despite creating openings through wide areas, the finishing touch remained elusive in London.
“We had some good chances, especially in the first half from cutbacks,” Lundkvist, who joined United in January, explained. “At halftime, we said to put in as many crosses as possible because we saw that as a weakness.
“But like you said, we have to put them in the net. We can’t keep crossing and get nothing from it. Hopefully, we improve that.”
With the race for European football heating up, there is little time for the squad to dwell on missed opportunities.
United remain in the hunt for silverware and a top-three finish, and Lundkvist believes the current disappointment must be used as fuel.
“We still have so much to play for this season,” the defender concluded. “Learning from each game and using this frustration going into Saturday will be crucial.”
United will need to find their scoring boots quickly if they are to fend off a surging Arsenal side and ensure they are playing elite European football next term.
