The English FA has opened an investigation into Hannibal Mejbri the Tunisian international & Burnley midfielder following allegations that he spat towards Leeds United supporters during Saturday’s Premier League match at Turf Moor.

According to report from the Daily Mail, the governing body's now working alongside Lancashire Police to determine whether the 22 year old was involved in the alleged incident which reportedly occurred late in 2nd half.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police confirmed that they're actively investigating the matter:

"Lancashire Police are aware of alleged incident involving Burnley player during second half of PL match between Burnley & Leeds. we're working with the club to establish the facts.".

The alleged spitting was initially reported by Leeds fan present at the stadium. While neither Burnley FC nor the FA have commented publicly, the matter is being treated seriously and could lead to disciplinary action depending on the findings.

Background: A history of tensions

Mejbri who came through the Man United academy was introduced as substitute in the 83 minute of the match and received yellow card in stoppage time.

It’s not first time the midfielder has clashed with the Leeds fanbase. During Championship fixture last season, he appeared to taunt opposition supporters while leaving the pitch after being substituted raising his arms in provocative gesture.

The 22 year old , a regular with the Tunisia national team has built reputation for his combative style and fiery temperament.

What happens next?

The FA’s disciplinary department will await the findings of the police investigation before deciding on potential sanctions.

If found guilty, Mejbri could face suspension, fine or even further legal consequences under the FA’s conduct and player behaviour regulations.
