Holstein Kiel stunned HSV at the Volksparkstadion, winning on penalties after 120 minutes of intense action! The first half was cagey, with Kiel creating the clearest chance when Phil Harres was denied by Daniel Peretz, while Hamburg came closest in the second half with Gocholeishvili hitting the post.

Extra time saw Muheim set up Bakery Jatta for a 1–0 HSV lead, but Harres struck a stunning free-kick in the 118th minute to equalise. With no further goals, Kiel held their nerve in the shootout, with Harres named man of the match, sending the Störche into the quarter-finals.

Here is our detailed match report for this game:

First half:

The Volksparkstadion witnessed the return of Guilherme Ramos to Hamburg’s backline as HSV hosted Holstein Kiel in their DFB Pokal round of 16 clash - and the match wasted no time setting an old-school cup tone. Within the first fifteen minutes, referee Tobias Welz had already shown three yellow cards, a clear sign of the physical battle both sets of players were ready to engage in.

Despite the early intensity, it was Hamburg who settled into a more controlled rhythm as the half progressed. The hosts circulated the ball well, kept Kiel pinned back for spells, and dictated the tempo after the frantic opening exchanges. Yet the better chances fell to the visitors.

Kiel striker Phil Harres had the clearest opportunity of the match in the 24th minute. After a quick transition, Harres broke free and fired a low effort toward the far corner - only to be denied brilliantly by Daniel Peretz, the Bayern loanee standing firm between the HSV posts. His reflex stop kept the match level and drew roars from the home crowd.

Following the stormy first 20 minutes, the encounter shifted into a far more subdued phase. A few half-chances for the Störche hinted at danger, but neither side managed to wrestle back the momentum or create sustained pressure before the interval.

With the energy settled and the tackles no longer flying in at the same rate, the teams headed into halftime with everything still to play for.

Half-time: HSV 0-0 Holstein Kiel.

Second half:

Holstein Kiel emerged from the halftime break with renewed energy, taking control of the early phases of the second half at the Volksparkstadion. The Störche carved out several promising openings in the first ten minutes after the restart, forcing Hamburg onto the back foot and momentarily shifting the dynamic of what had been a tightly contested match.

But from the 65th minute onward, the momentum swung decisively in HSV’s favour.

Hamburg continued to dominate possession, push Kiel deeper, and create increasingly dangerous situations around Kiel's penalty area. Their best opportunity arrived in the 80th minute, when Giorgi Gocholeishvili cut inside and unleashed a low, driven effort toward the far corner - only for the ball to crash off the post and bounce clear. The stadium groaned in frustration as HSV came inches away from a breakthrough.

Then it was left-back Miro Muheim who found space on the other side in attack and struck from distance, missing the target by barely half a metre.

Both sides briefly traded chances, but Hamburg’s sustained pressure in the final stages kept the crowd fully engaged.

The final ten minutes unfolded in a charged, pulsating atmosphere as HSV pushed relentlessly for a winner, urged on by a roaring Volksparkstadion. Yet despite the drama, neither side managed to land the decisive blow.

After 90 minutes of intense, chance-laden football, the scoreboard still read HSV 0–0 Holstein Kiel - Extra time awaits in Hamburg.

Extra time:

Extra time in Hamburg began cautiously, with both HSV and Holstein Kiel avoiding risks and waiting for the other side to slip. The match finally exploded into life at the start of the second extra-time period.

Miro Muheim whipped a low cross across the box, finding Bakery Jatta, who fired HSV into a 1–0 lead - sending the Volksparkstadion into a frenzy. Hamburg then focused on protecting their advantage, while Kiel pushed forward with a more aggressive approach.

Kiel’s persistence paid off in the 118th minute: awarded a dangerous free-kick, Phil Harres curled in a brilliant equaliser - Kiel’s first real chance of extra time - making it 1-1 and silencing the home crowd.

With no time left for a response, the match headed to a penalty shootout, where the final DFB Pokal quarter-final spot would be decided.
