Manchester United loanee Harry Amass has detailed how he has handled Sheffield Wednesday’s off-field woes to thrive on the pitch.
Wednesday have been dealing with financial difficulties throughout the year, culminating in administration for the first time in the club’s history last month.
This development ended owner Dejphon Chansiri’s controversial 10-year tenure at the club, which was highlighted by repeated breaches of EFL regulations, wage delays, and mounting debts.
As a consequence of being placed in administration, Wednesday were hit with a hefty 12-point deduction. This, combined with Wednesday’s poor form, currently has the side marooned firmly at the bottom of the Championship table.
United are covering the costs of Amass’ loan spell with the Owls, including his wages. Despite the club’s problems, Amass is enjoying a fantastic stint. He has emerged as a key member of the squad, playing 90 minutes in the last 10 fixtures. He recently scored his first professional goal during a loss at the hands of Southampton.
United have the option of recalling Amass in January but the Red Devils have decided to let him finish the season at Hillsborough.
Talks are ongoing between United and Wednesday to reach an agreement over an extended stay.
Amass spoke to Wednesday’s in-house media and revealed how he has dealt with the club’s administration. He also named the defender he is currently modelling his game on.
The England youth international said [as quoted by The Star], “I have not really let it affect me.”
“I think I have just come in to enjoy my football, which I’m doing, be part of a team and try and get results.”
“All the other stuff, I don’t really let it affect the way I play or the way I think. Nothing really matters when you’re on the pitch, and that’s the way I look at it.”
Asked who he is looking to emulate, the teenager answered, “I would say I model it now on Nuno Mendes because he is probably the best left-back in the world, in my opinion, now.”
“In the past, probably Ashley Cole.”
Amass and Wednesday are next in action on Sunday when they host derby rivals Sheffield United.
