Leeds United loanee Harry Gray missed Rotherham United's 5-0 defeat at Peterborough United on Tuesday night with a slight hamstring issue, in what proved to be Hamshaw's final game in charge.
On Wednesday morning the club said in a statement that Hamshaw had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect, noting his historical ties and passion for Rotherham. With the team six points from safety in League One, they said action was needed to aid survival and that the process to appoint a new first-team manager was under way.
Gray has been a regular since joining the Millers on loan in January for the second half of the 2025/26 season. He has made 12 appearances and logged more than 1,000 minutes of senior football, the exposure Leeds sought from the move.
The 17-year-old has scored two goals during the spell.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Gray will remain with Rotherham to rehab what is thought to be a minor injury, or return to Thorp Arch.
