Harry Kane chasing Lewandowski's Bundesliga record

The Bundesliga record of Gerd Müller lasted nearly five decades before being surpassed by Robert Lewandowski, but the Polish striker's mark may not last as long. Harry Kane is experiencing the most prolific scoring year of his career and is already threatening his predecessor, with clear goals set for a 'balanced' competition for the title of top scorer in a Bundesliga season.

The legendary striker Müller scored 40 goals in the 1971/72 season, a feat that seemed impossible to beat at the time... And it took until 2021 to be beaten by Lewa. That season, the then Bayern Munich striker scored 41 goals with an impressively high average, having played only 29 matches in the Bundesliga.

Kane is unlikely to match the same average – he has already played 24 matches and scored 30 goals – but he will have 10 games to reach 41 goals should he stay fit. At his current pace, the striker is all set to surpass Lewa and the tactic to keep up the pace was revealed by the player himself to German outlet Bild.

"It will be difficult to surpass him," acknowledged the former Tottenham player. "I don't look at the records and think: 'I want to break that record now'

"What I do is divide the matches into stages. For example, from now until the international break, we have five matches. I ask myself: 'Can I score five goals?'"

Kane has been scoring more than one goal per match, but tries to keep his feet on the ground with his goals. The striker also considers home games and the difficulty of the opponents when setting his goal targets.

"With five games, I hope to score one goal per match. But, of course, it can always be a bit more, or a bit less. Five would be a good target and, most importantly: five wins."
