Former Blue Shaun Wright-Phillips has said he hopes Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has “learnt his lesson” in the transfer market.

The Blues have been free spending in the transfer market since the take over by Boehly and Clearlake Capital just over two years ago.

Chelsea broke the British record twice to sign Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, and have made a number of other big money signings.

Wright-Phillips hopes Boehly has learnt from his mistakes

As well as signing players for the first team Chelsea have also invested heavily in a number of stars for the future, many of which may never kick a ball for the club.

Chelsea are once again set to be busy this summer and have already completed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich for £30m.

The Blues are looking to sign a centre back, left winger and versatile attacker to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s squad, whilst there’s also a number of players who need to be moved on.

Chelsea could sell as many as ten players this summer, but Wright-Phillips claims they need to sell around 16, and hopes Boehly has learnt his lesson.

“I hope that Todd Boehly has learned his lesson in the market, because they’ve got almost 50 players in the squad and he has to get to grips with things at some point,” he said as cited on X.com.

“They need to get rid of about 16 players, at least, and I find it hard to believe they’ll manage that, whether they want to or not.”

Chelsea gearing up for multiple departures

Chelsea are hoping to find new homes for high earners Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling which is easier said than done.

Renato Veiga and Axel Disasi are set to leave the club, with Chelsea likely to have a reshuffle at centre back, whilst Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix are also likely to depart.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is on the verge of joining Arsenal for £5m, whilst Chelsea have an agreement with Djordje Petrovic that he can leave for £25m, and it will be interesting to see how many players the Blues manage to sell.
