Sheffield United were forced to settle for a frustrating point at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon after being pegged back late by West Bromwich Albion in a performance that lacked quality.
The hosts struggled to impose themselves for large periods but eventually found the breakthrough early in the second half through a slice of misfortune for Albion. In the 53rd minute, defender George Campbell slid in to cut out a dangerous cross from Gustavo Hamer, only to divert the ball beyond his own goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.
Despite falling behind, Albion responded positively and began to threaten. Adam Davies was called into action soon after, producing a solid save to deny Isaac Price’s speculative effort from the edge of the box.
At the other end, the Blades had several chances to kill the game but were repeatedly wasteful in front of goal. Callum O’Hare, Sydie Peck, Tyrese Campbell and Hamer all squandered excellent opportunities from close range as Sheffield United failed to capitalise on their advantage. Those missed chances ultimately proved costly.
With seven minutes remaining, Albion found their equaliser, and it came from the unlikely source of Campbell, who made amends for his earlier own goal in spectacular fashion. Picking up possession from distance, the defender unleashed a powerful strike that flew past Davies and into the net to level the contest.
After the match, Blades manager Chris Wilder admitted his side were well below their usual standards and felt the result represented two points dropped.
Speaking to SUTV, Wilder criticised the lack of quality and ruthlessness in the final third, particularly against a side content to sit deep and defend.
“When it’s top-end Championship football and the situation we’re in and the players we’ve got, we’ve got to find that quality and those moments,” Wilder said. “Big blocks, big saves, big tackles, a pass, a cross or a finish, those moments determine the outcomes of games and we just never found enough of them.”
The United boss was particularly disappointed that his side failed to build on their lead after going ahead, highlighting several clear opportunities that should have secured victory.
“Still, one goal should be enough to win a game of football,” he added. “But we missed two or three really good chances to get that second goal.”
Wilder also questioned the attacking impact of his forward players, stressing that decisive contributions are essential in tight games late in the season.
“The performance wasn’t of the standard I expect, especially at this stage of the season and in the position we’re in. Too many didn’t affect the game and the front four didn’t affect it enough. When you’re in games like this, your attacking players have to come alive.”
He also expressed frustration at the way his side conceded the equaliser, pointing to lapses in organisation and awareness that allowed Campbell to drive through midfield unchallenged before striking.
“We got done with a bit of organisation,” Wilder said. “The ball falls between three players and he strides through. That can’t happen. We needed to be narrower and more alive to the second ball.”
Sheffield United are next in action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City.
