Chelsea suffered a major blow before the start of the season with Levi Colwill suffering an ACL injury, but the Blues opted not to replace the England international.

The club have certainly paid the price for that decision, with Chelsea having a number of issues defensively so far this season.

Joe Cole claims Trevoh Chalobah is Chelsea’s best defender

Chelsea missed out on Jeremy Jacquet to Liverpool despite pursuing the Frenchman for the majority of the window.

The Blues instead recalled Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg, but he’s made just five appearances over the second half of the season.

Centre back is a major problem, with Wesley Fofana’s form falling off a cliff over the last couple of months, whilst Chalobah is currently sidelined with an injury.

Who Chelsea decide to sign in the summer remains to be seen, but Cole believes Chalobah is the best defender at the club.

“The central defensive position for Chelsea, I think about the players we’ve let out the door,” he told The Dressing Room Podcast.

Marc Guehi, Chalobah, Tomori, and the amount of money spent on replacements, the Badiashiles, Fofanas, the Koulibalys of this world, you wonder how that’s gonna play out over the past two years.

“You wonder how that’s going to play out, because I still think Trevoh Chalobah’s our best central defender, and he’s getting better and better.

“He understands the club, it was a crime to let him leave. He’s been brilliant to date. He’s improving constantly.”
