Hoffenheim are said to be closing in on NEC Nijmegen midfielder Kodai Sano after a breakthrough in their pursuit.

De Telegraaf reports the Bundesliga club have submitted a serious bid, with a transfer now viewed as imminent.

Hoffenheim had a €15 million offer rejected last month. Nijmegen were reported to value the 22-year-old at €20 million, and the size of the latest bid has not been disclosed.

VfB Stuttgart have also been linked with the central midfielder, who is the brother of Mainz and Japan international Kaishu Sano.

Hoffenheim’s imminent sale of Bazoumana Touré to Newcastle United for a reported €50 million may have helped finance the move.

The club have already added five players this summer, signing Mats Rots, 20, Patrick Wimmer, 25, Cajetan Lenz, 20, Alessandro Vogt, 21, and Sean Dulic, 21.
