Wells joined Bristol City from Burnley for a fee of £5 million in January 2020, and he was a regular during his time at the club under a host of different managers, including Lee Johnson, Dean Holden, Nigel Pearson and Liam Manning.

With his deal expiring this summer, Wells had been in talks with the Robins about an extension to his contract, and speaking in March, former head coach Manning, who departed to take over at Norwich City earlier this month, revealed that he was hopeful the club would reach an agreement with the 35-year-old.

Wells played a crucial role last season as City finished sixth in the Championship table, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in 43 appearances in all competitions, but just days after Gerhard Struber was appointed as Manning's replacement, it has been confirmed that the striker will be leaving after five-and-a-half years at the club.

In an emotional farewell message to Robins supporters, Wells said that he had built up a "massive connection" with everyone at the club, and he insisted that the "special memories" he had made at Ashton Gate "will live with me forever", highlighting the scenes of celebration on the final day of last season after the draw against Preston North End that sealed the club's play-off place as one of his favourite moments.

As shown by the response to his departure, Wells was a popular figure on and off the pitch at Bristol City, and chairman Jon Lansdown led the tributes to the striker, describing him as an "exceptional role model".

Among those to react to Wells' exit was former City midfielder Scott, who scored six goals and provided seven assists in 91 games at senior level after coming through the club's academy before being sold to Bournemouth for £25 million in the summer of 2023.

Scott is currently out in Slovakia with England for the European Under-21 Championship, and he has scored one goal in three appearances so far to help Lee Carsley's side reach the semi-finals of the tournament, but he has taken time out to send a message to his former Robins team-mate Wells on social media.

Quoting a post from City's official X account in which they thanked Wells for his service to the club, Scott simply wrote: "Legend, what a guy".

Bristol City will surely agree with Alex Scott's Nakhi Wells verdict

Wells may not have been the most prolific scorer, but he was a big asset for Bristol City during his time at the club, and he played a key role last season as they reached the Championship play-offs for the first time since 2008.

The striker may have been unable to achieve his goal of firing the Robins to the Premier League, but he did help his side to make significant progress up the Championship table, and he formed a strong bond with supporters off the pitch, which is underlined by the fact that he was named the club’s PFA Community Champion last month.

However, Wells was the only player over the age of 30 in the current City squad, and as new head coach Struber looks to implement a new high-intensity, attacking style of play, it may be the right time for him to depart Ashton Gate, but he will certainly leave with the best wishes of the fan base.
