A 96th minute strike from Jack Moylan sealed the victory that achieved a top two spot in League One.

The Imps have not competed in the second tier of English football since 1961, with a 65-year wait now coming to an end under Michael Skubala.

Lincoln have won nine of their last 10 league fixtures to take a commanding position at the top of the table, giving them a now insurmountable 19 point gap to third place Bradford City.

Skubala’s side can also clinch the title ahead of second place Cardiff City with another seven points from their remaining five fixtures, regardless of what the Bluebirds do.

The gap between the two clubs is currently 12 points, but Brian Barry-Murphy’s team hold a fixture in hand.

Former Lincoln manager Danny Cowley has congratulated the current squad on their promotion to the Championship following the 2-1 win over Reading.

The 47-year-old has expressed his delight at seeing the progress that’s been made by the club since he first took over 10 years ago, with the team competing in the National League at the time.

“Ah @LincolnCity_FC … I am so happy for you all,” wrote Cowley, via his X account.

“What an incredible achievement!

“A brilliant football club with so many special people!

“Just shows what can be achieved when people come together & there is joined up thinking.

“What a 10 years to be an Imp! Enjoy!

“Much love UTI.”

Cowley took charge at Lincoln following the 2015/16 campaign, with the team finishing 13th prior to his arrival.

But he had an immediate impact on the club, with the Imps earning automatic promotion by winning the fifth division title in 2017, earning 99 points in the process.

The 47-year-old oversaw two more seasons with the club, including a seventh place finish in their first year in League Two, followed by automatic promotion to League One in 2019.

Cowley departed in September 2019 when he made the switch to Huddersfield Town, where he spent 10 months as manager.

The former Lincoln boss went on to manage at Portsmouth before taking over at Colchester United in January 2024, where he is currently plying his trade.

Lincoln will now be preparing for life in the Championship next season, although they’ll still have one eye on clinching the League One title before then.

Skubala’s side have earned a lot of plaudits for his work with the team, having been in charge since November 2023.

Next up for the third tier side is a home clash against Leyton Orient on 11 April in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Danny Cowley’s efforts won’t be forgotten at Lincoln

While Cowley is now gone from the club for a number of years, his efforts in bringing the Imps from the National League to League One won’t be forgotten any time soon.

Supporters will be glad to see this message as they celebrate promotion, as he will still be fondly remembered for his time as manager.

Skubala has been able to use the platform built by Cowley to guide Lincoln to the Championship, so he deserves some credit for this achievement even after being gone all these years.

It’s an exciting time for the Imps, and fans will now be dreaming of what is possible next season in their first year in the second tier since 1961.
