Elliot Anderson’s move from Nottingham Forest to Man City was confirmed on Thursday, a flat £116m up front making him the most expensive British player, although talks could have taken a very different turn.

Forest had already rejected two bids before an agreement was struck. According to The Athletic, negotiations twisted and turned, with owner Evangelos Marinakis at one point inclined to walk away and later weighing a lower-priced sale to another club in mid June.

Anderson is with England at the World Cup, preparing for a last-16 meeting with Mexico. Forest announced his departure and plan to recognise his outstanding contribution at an appropriate time.

The necessary formalities are due to be completed after his return to England, following a medical carried out in Kansas. He is 23.

Forest signed Anderson from Newcastle United in summer 2024 for £35m, with goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos moving the other way for £20m, leaving a net £15m outlay.
