After a busy start to the 2025/2026 season, several members of Manchester City’s senior squad embarked on international duty during the first international break of the new campaign.

A large portion of the team participated in significant matches with their respective countries as they seek to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the majority of City’s squad in qualification outings via the UEFA Confederation.

In Group E, Rodri and Spain took on Bulgaria and Turkey, defeating the former 0-3 before then defeating Turkey 0-6 to further extend their lead in the group. The Manchester City made featured in a total of 50 minutes across the two games from the substitutes’ bench.

Meanwhile, in Group F, Rúben Dias and Bernardo Silva helped Portugal kickstart their 2026 qualification campaign with two victories against Armenia and Hungary. The Portuguese earned a commanding 0-5 victory against Armenia, but struggled against a difficult Hungarian team.

It was not until a last-minute goal by former City player João Cancelo that the Portuguese secured a narrow 2-3 victory, leaving Portugal top of their group with four games to play. Bernardo Silva was a standout performer with a goal and an assist to his name against Hungary.

In Group G, Nathan Aké and Tijjani Reijnders joined the Netherlands for a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Poland, before then earning a narrow 2-3 victory against Lithuania. Reijnders played both games, while Aké only featured in the latter. Those results mean the Netherlands are top of their group on goal difference, having played one game less, level on 10 points with Poland.

Meanwhile, in Group I, Erling Haaland and Oscar Bobb played two games for Norway, one of which was a 1-0 win over Finland in an international friendly thanks to a solitary goal from the Manchester City striker.

The Norwegians then turned their focus toward qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they earned a resounding 11-1 victory against Moldova, in a contest that saw Haaland notch a remarkable five goals and two assists in 90 minutes of action.

Elsewhere in Group I, Gianluigi Donnarumma played in both of Italy’s qualification matches during the international break. The Italian goalkeeper would help Italy secure two victories against Estonia and Israel, leaving them now second in their group behind Norway.

In Group J, Jérémy Doku helped Belgium secure two 6-0 victories against Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan. The Manchester City would score two goals in the victory against the latter, with those results now leaving the Red Devils second in their group and one point less than North Macedonia having played one game fewer.

Finally, in Group K, James Trafford joined England for their two matches against Andorra and Serbia but remained as an unused substitute in both contests as he played second-fiddle to Jordan Pickford. John Stones withdrew from the camp prior to the first of the two fixtures owing to a muscular issue.

Outside of the UEFA qualifiers, members of Manchester City’s senior men’s squad also competed in other continental World Cup qualifiers. Omar Marmoush joined Egypt during the CAF qualification period, earning an important victory against Ethiopia and a draw against Burkina Faso.

The City striker would sustain a knee injury in the second of the two fixtures to rule him out of action for the upcoming Manchester derby.
