Liam Delap made the £30m switch from Ipswich Town to Chelsea this summer
Liam Delap’s exit from Ipswich Town in the summer eventually saw Chelsea win the race for his signature, with the Tractor Boys unable to retain the talisman's services following relegation straight back to the Championship
The forward was linked to a number of Premier League clubs, but it was the London outfit that eventually paid the reported fee of £30 million.
The forward had only joined the Tractor Boys 12 months prior, arriving from Manchester City following their promotion to the top-flight under Kieran McKenna
The 22-year-old contributed 12 goals and two assists from 37 appearances, but it wasn’t enough to keep Ipswich in the division as they finished 19th in the table. Naturally, though, Delap's performances at a young age in a struggling side caught the eye, and his move to Stamford Bridge has been accompanied by a steep, and unsurprising, salary hike.
Here, we use estimated figures from Capology to compare Delap’s wages at Portman Road to what he is now earning with Chelsea…
Delap signed for Ipswich in the 2024 summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported £20 million following their second place finish in the Championship.
The forward agreed a contract that ran until 2029, but a £30 million relegation release clause opened the door for his exit to Chelsea.
As part of his five-year deal, the striker received an estimated £20,000 per week from the Suffolk outfit.
This made him a below average earner in McKenna’s side, with the mean salary of a first team player amounting to around £23,000 per week for the 2024/25 campaign.
Other forward options like Sammie Szmodics and Chiedozie Ogbene were both ahead of Delap in the wages pecking order, with the pair of Ireland internationals receiving £25,000-a-week each from Ipswich.
Axel Tuanzebe was the highest paid permanent member of McKenna’s side, with the defender earning £40,000 per week.
Arijanet Muric and Dara O’Shea were also among the best paid, with the duo earning £35,000 per week after they both arrived from Burnley.
Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke, two other important parts of the attack, were paid £25,000 per week as they were also signed from Aston Villa and Sunderland in big-money moves.
Despite being paid less than the other attacking options in the Ipswich squad last season, it was Delap that most stood out, alongside Omari Hutchinson.
His 12 goals were the most of any player in the team, but they weren’t enough to stave off the drop to the Championship.
The 22-year-old even scored against his future employer Chelsea in a 2-0 win in December, with the Blues going on to agree terms on a £100,000 per week salary to sign him.
Competition for the forward was stiff, with his £30 million release clause proving an attractive option for a number of Premier League sides.
Both Newcastle United and Manchester United were linked with a move for the Ipswich star, but it was Chelsea that sealed the deal.
Delap is still far from being the Blues’ top earner, which is currently Raheem Sterling at a cost of £325,000 per week.
But the pay increase on his Ipswich salary far exceeds what anyone is receiving in McKenna’s side this season.
