The duo are among the highest earners at Home Park during the 24/25 campaign
Plymouth Argyle have one of the smallest budgets in the Championship for the 24/25 campaign, meaning every penny has to be well spent if the Greens are going to compete in the second tier.
According to estimates from Capology, only newly-promoted Portsmouth are spending less on players’ salaries during the current season, with the Greens said to be forking out £172,800 a week on their playing squad.
As two of the protagonists of the Pilgrims’ dressing room, Joe Edwards and Morgan Whittaker both rank highly among the best-paid players at the club, with the pair having a big effect on the Home Park side over the past few years.
Here we take a look at how the duo compare using Capology’s estimates, and how that lines up compared to the rest of the players pulling on a green shirt for the current campaign.
It may come as a surprise to many that Whittaker isn’t one of the best paid players at Plymouth Argyle to date, with the former Swansea City man said to be on £7,500 every seven days during his time in Devon.
With the likes of Burnley and Rangers said to have been sniffing around in the summer transfer window, the forward could have easily improved his financial situation with a move away, so to stay put is testament to his commitment to the Argyle cause.
The wide man will no doubt have performance-related bonuses added on to that base salary, with his eye for goal likely to swell his bank balance, as well as earn his side points at the bottom of the second tier.
It is only recently that club captain Edwards has started to earn more than the Greens’ chief goal-getter, with the 34-year-old agreeing a one-year contract extension earlier in the season, which will see him stick with the club until the end of the 25/26 campaign.
As well as prolonging his stint at Home Park, the former Walsall man was also well-reimbursed for his loyalty to the club, with Capology estimating that his weekly wage rose from £3,077 to £10,000.
Edwards’ new deal sees him rank among the highest-earners at Home Park now, but a number of players still earn more than he does, with Adam Forshaw and Bali Mumba [pictured] the pair who are earning the most from Monday to Sunday, as well as Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi.
Those players are reportedly earning £15,000 a week during their time at Home Park, while short-term signing Andre Gray is said to be coining £12,500 after signing a deal from October until the end of the calendar year.
Edwards then ranks alongside Mustapha Bundu and Victor Palsson on £10,000 per week, while Whittaker finds himself in the next batch of players earning £7,500 per week, or the equivalent of £390,000 a year.
The forward ranks alongside goalkeeper Conor Hazard and loanee Ibrahim Cissoko in terms of seven-day salary, having signed a four-year deal with the club when he joined permanently in the summer of last year for a club-record fee of £1 million.
