Mick Brown has tipped Coventry City as a potential Kieran Trippier destination this summer
One of the more intriguing early transfer stories for the upcoming summer surrounds the future of Kieran Trippier, after it was announced that he'd be leaving Newcastle United at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old, who was the first Magpies signing after they were taken over by a Saudi-led consortium in late 2021, will be departing St James' Park at the end of his current contract.
Trippier has a wealth of top-flight experience, spending the last 12 years of his career in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle, alongside a stint in La Liga with Atlético Madrid, and despite his age, would be a great pickup for a side looking to get into the Premier League or establish itself in it.
That's been the thought of former Coventry City assistant boss Mick Brown, at least, who has touted the Sky Blues as a potential destination for the full-back this summer, with Frank Lampard's side likely preparing for a first top-flight campaign since 2000/01.
There'll definitely be plenty of incomings at the CBS Arena this summer, as Coventry look to bolster their squad with quality and, more importantly, top-flight experience. So, could Trippier become the new Sky Blues right-back next season?

There are a few drawbacks and question marks surrounding a potential switch to Coventry for Trippier this summer. His age may prove to be a deal breaker, with the full-back set to turn 36 in September, but his wage demands may also prove to be too high.
After all, the 35-year-old has been used to high-level European wages for a decade now, and his current club are well-regarded as one of the richest in the world.
Currently, Trippier is estimated to be earning a whopping £120,000 per week at Newcastle, per Capology, a number which the Sky Blues likely wouldn't be expecting to match this coming summer.
When you compare that to the wage bill at the CBS Arena, it blows the highest earners out of the water. Capology estimates Luke Woolfenden, Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and Matt Grimes to be the current highest earners, all earning £25,000 per week, a mere fraction of what Trippier is said to be on.
Realistically, £25,000 won't be the highest paid player at Coventry, as and when they do end up in the Premier League. But when compared with Sunderland this season, who last year had a similar wage bill in their Championship promotion campaign, only Granit Xhaka and Nordi Mukiele are estimated to earn over £100,000 per week currently.
Both of them arguably have more importance to Sunderland than Trippier would in the Coventry squad, so even with the potential being there to offer someone a six-figure weekly wage, the Sky Blues would likely shy away from giving the 35-year-old such a deal if he demands it.

You can't put a price on experience, so if an opportunity to bring in someone who has close to 300 combined top-flight appearances in England and Spain, plus over 50 England caps, becomes available for free, a newly-promoted side, as Coventry should be in the summer, should be all over it.
Especially given the onus on being strong at set-pieces in the modern era of football, too. Trippier is still one of the best free-kick and corner takers in England, so his presence would be more than helpful for a Sky Blues side looking to establish itself back in the Premier League.
However, this would only be a good deal at a certain price. Of all the positions that Coventry would be aiming to improve, right-back wouldn't be right at the top of the priority list. Milan van Ewijk has been touted as top-flight ready for a couple of years now and has recently signed a new deal at the CBS Arena.
To have Trippier come in to effectively slot in when needed and provide competition for wages beyond that role wouldn't be wise, especially if it doesn't work out, too, as then you'd have an ageing player on big money heading into the Championship — an issue that Burnley are currently dealing with regarding Kyle Walker.
So, while it would be a statement signing for Frank Lampard's side heading into a Premier League return, it should only really be explored if it's financially smart to do so.
