The offer is expected to be rejected, but the statement of intent can only be a positive for Cardiff fans

A consortium which includes former Tottenham and Real Madrid star, Gareth Bale, has made a £40 million bid to buy Cardiff City.

This is according to a report from The Times, who note that, while the bid is expected to be rejected, it demonstrates intent from the Cardiff native to see his side return to the Premier League.

The Bluebirds' six-year stay in the Championship came to an end last season, as Cardiff were relegated to League One, and will play in the third tier for the first time since the 2002/03 campaign.

Since that time, the club have enjoyed two promotions to the Premier League, but suffered immediate relegation both times.

Vincent Tan is thought to have little interest in selling the club he has invested over £200 million into since his purchase in 2010, but given how popular Bale is among the Cardiff fanbase, it may only be a matter of time before he is almost forced to give in to this new consortium.

But if he does, he's going to want to receive a lot more than £40 million.

Vincent Tan is expected to reject the £40 million proposal from Gareth Bale's consortium to buy Cardiff City.

The controversial Malaysian owner has been at odds with the fans ever since buying the club in 2010, with various off-field decisions leading Cardiff supporters to demand that the club be sold.

Now, with the club staring their first League One season in 25 years in the face, more questions are being asked about whether Tan will finally call it quits after 15 years as Cardiff owner.

However, the 73-year-old isn't backing down just yet. He seems set on retaining his ownership, and a reported bid proposal sent by the consortium at the back end of June didn't even reach the boardroom discussion stage.

Bale has gone on to say that being involved in an ownership group would be "a dream come true," so you'd expect that more back-and-forth will take place between Tan and the Welshman's consortium.

Amidst talk about Cardiff City being purchased by a consortium including Gareth Bale, football finance expert Kieran Maguire explained how much League One clubs are generally worth.

He told Wales Online that he knew of a League One club that was sold last year for twice its revenue before going on to say that the revenue for Cardiff next season is going to be "something like £15 million in League One."

"If he sells it for £30 million, I don't know what the situation is with the stadium, but that wouldn't be a bad price," Maguire added.

So, if Tan is already rejecting proposals of £40 million for Cardiff, how long would it take for Bale and co to back out, knowing that they would have to bid well over the odds to earn control of the club?

Maguire stated that Tan would have to bite the bullet and accept that he would be walking away with a considerable loss on his investment if he were to depart his post, so perhaps it could be a case of who holds out the longest between Vincent Tan and those wanting to buy Cardiff from him.
