The highly-rated defender made a late transfer window switch to Bramall Lane

Sheffield United may have endured a dire start to the Championship campaign, but they were also one of the busiest sides in the division when it came to recruitment in the recently-closed summer transfer window.

After suffering defeat at the hands of Sunderland in the second tier play-off final at Wembley Stadium on May 24th, COH Sports made the controversial decision to initially part ways with boyhood Blades supporter and modern-day icon, Chris Wilder, as they adopted a new transfer strategy with a focus on AI and the analytical side of the game.

As a result, Ruben Selles was handed the reins at Bramall Lane and immediately set about making changes to a squad which, if it wasn't for a two-point deduction at the start of the 2024/25 season, accumulated a total of 92 points across the regular season.

Many signings made throughout the earlier stages of the window indicated that those in power in this part of the Steel City were in search of players who could offer the club strong resale value in the coming seasons, should they reach their maximum potential.

Unsurprisingly, as United's season unfolded into chaos, many supporters were left concerned at the lack of experience coming through the door, and that would be rectified to an extent, prior to the Spaniard being given his P45 after Deadline Day and the first international break following a run of six defeats in all competitions and several uninspiring performances to go with them.

Regardless, the capture of Japhet Tanganga from divisional rivals, Millwall, has certainly gone down well with those in South Yorkshire, especially when taking into account the profile of clubs who were also interested in prizing the centre-back away from the Den.

With that being said, FLW have looked at how his wage at Bramall Lane compares to the salary he was collecting in South London.

Japhet Tanganga was among Millwall's highest earners in permanent spell

After previously coming through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, where he would make 50 senior appearances, Tanganga initially moved to Millwall on loan in January 2024 as the club looked to steer clear of relegation in what was a compact second tier bottom half.

Despite then-head coach Joe Edwards being swiftly replaced by Neil Harris, the towering centre-back's presence was integral to a remarkable run of late-season form, which included goals in victories over Southampton and Birmingham City.

To many people's surprise, Harris was able to then land the defender's services on a permanent deal following his release by the North London side, and it would be an inspired piece of business that both he and Alex Neil would benefit from, with the Millwall legend describing Tanganga as a "Premier League player all day long" after a stellar display against eventual champions, Leeds United.

During his one season as a permanently contracted Lions player, according to Capology - a site which ESTIMATES player earnings - Tanganga was on a weekly wage of £25,000 per week and a seasonal figure of £1.3m.

Despite his importance to the side, as Millwall narrowly missed out on the play-offs, he wasn't the highest earner at the club, with both Aaron Connolly and Joe Bryan collecting greater salaries.

Japhet Tanganga has seen his wage increase at Sheffield United despite Blades' overall struggles

Tanganga was once again the subject of mass speculation this summer, in no small part down to a £1.2m release clause that could have been activated by Premier League sides.

However, with just four days of the transfer window remaining, the former England youth international moved up the M1 to Bramall Lane for a reported £7m, joining the likes of Ben Godfrey, Nils Zatterstrom, Tyler Bindon, Ben Mee and Mark McGuinness as additions to the centre-back union at the Blades.

According to Capology, Tanganga has seen his wage increase by £10,000 to an ESTIMATED £35,000 per week, which equates to a sum of £1.82m across the season as a whole.

Unsurprisingly, given the high-profile nature of the transfer, the London-born man is said to be United's highest-paid permanent player, as only Godfrey - on £75,000 per week - collects a greater weekly sum.

Despite a slow start to his spell in the Steel City as United remain pointless, his importance to the side moving forward has already been acknowledged by supporters and the returning Wilder, who gave Tanganga the captain's armband in just his third appearance for the club against Charlton Athletic.
