Plymouth are preparing for life back in League One following their relegation from the Championship last season, but despite losing manager Miron Muslic to German side Schalke in May, it has been a positive start to the summer at Home Park.

The Pilgrims appointed former Watford boss Tom Cleverley, who led the Hornets to a 14th-placed finish in the Championship last term, as Muslic's replacement, and while key players such as Adam Randell, Jordan Houghton, Mustapha Bundu and Ryan Hardie have departed, there have been plenty of incomings in recent weeks.

Argyle have already signed Jack MacKenzie, Caleb Watts, Bradley Ibrahim, Xavier Amaechi, Jamie Paterson and Owen Oseni this summer, and it seems they are now nearing their seventh signing of what is proving to be an incredibly busy transfer window.

According to Sky Sports Transfer Centre (2nd July, 11:32), Plymouth have agreed a deal for Fleetwood defender Wiredu, and they are set to pay a six-figure fee in order to land his signature.

After spells with Charlton Athletic and Bromley earlier in his career, Wiredu joined Fleetwood from Colchester United in the summer of 2022.

Wiredu was handed the captain's armband last summer following the Cod Army's relegation to League Two, and while it proved to be an underwhelming season for the Lancashire outfit as they finished 14th in the table, the 25-year-old impressed on an individual level, scoring two goals in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Despite signing a new two-and-a-half year contract at Highbury Stadium last year, Wiredu has attracted plenty of interest in recent transfer windows, and as FLW exclusively revealed, his move to Wigan Athletic fell through in January due to issues with his medical.

Rotherham United reportedly had a bid for Wiredu rejected last month, but it appears his time at Fleetwood is now coming to an end as he closes in on a switch to Plymouth.

Sky Sports claim that the Pilgrims are set to pay a fee of around £300,000 for Wiredu, and the defender is believed to have agreed personal terms with the club and completed a medical, with the paperwork on his contract currently being finalised.

Brendan Wiredu arrival is perfect timing for Plymouth Argyle amid Maxi Talovierov exit talk

It has been a busy start to the summer for Plymouth, and winning the race for Wiredu's signature would be another big statement of intent from the club ahead of their return to League One.

The Pilgrims have already lost one centre-back this summer in Nikola Katic, who has reunited with Muslic at Schalke after his loan spell at Home Park came to an end, and Stoke City are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Maksym Talovierov, so the imminent arrival of Wiredu could not be coming at a better time for Cleverley.

While Wiredu was playing in League Two last season, he has previously proven his quality at League One level with Fleetwood, and he will surely thrive in an Argyle side who are expected to be among the promotion front-runners next season.
